throwback thursday – ratatat: “loud pipes”

every once in awhile, i listen to ratatat and am reminded why the duo is one of my favorite marriages of live and sampled music.  their 2006 album classics still ranks as their best, in my own humble opinion, but it’s still hard to pick my favorite song from that record.  i first heard “lex” the summer in between my freshman and sophomore year of high school, followed by “wildcat,” but it took me three more years to figure out the band’s identity.  crazy, i know, but shazam didn’t exist in 2007.

the best part about ratatat, and classics in particular, is that their songs span a multitude of moods.  “lex” is triumphant, “kennedy” is upbeat, but i’ve been afflicted by downtempo music recently, so “loud pipes” really hits the spot today.  this fan-made music video makes it that much better, too.  check it out below, and be sure to get acquainted with ratatat if you somehow missed out the first time around.
